Exploring Powertrain Options in the 2019 Volvo XC90

The new 2019 XC90 is Volvo largest, most capable vehicle. The three-row luxury SUV lives up to Volvo's promise for style, refinement, safety, and more.

If a new XC90 is on your radar, you'll need to choose a powertrain option that works for you. The premium SUV has three engines to choose from, each one providing solid all-around performance.

XC90 T5: The T5 powertrain puts a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine under the hood of the XC90. With help from turbocharging, this engine can offer up to 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

XC90 T6: This powertrain keeps the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder platform and adds an additional supercharger. This extra forced induction brings power up to 316 horses and 295 pound-feet of torque.

XC90 T8 Twin-Engine: The T8 powertrain is a plug-in hybrid system that maximizes both power and efficiency. Power starts with the supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder gas engine, but full potential is achieved with the addition of the electric motor. Together, the two make a combined 400 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque. Plus, it can allow for up to 62 mpge.

No matter which engine you choose, you'll get a precise eight-speed Geartronic automatic transmission. Available wheel-mounted paddle shifters mean you can take control of gear shifts. Front-wheel drive is standard for the T5 and T6 powertrains, and all-wheel drive is available. The T8 powertrain comes exclusively with all-wheel drive.
