What is a Differential?

A differential is a vital mechanical element of an automobile, truck, and other types of vehicles that utilize wheels. Technically speaking, a differential permits the outer drive wheel to rotate at a faster speed than the inner drive wheel when an automobile is making a turn.

The difference in speed is necessary because it permits the outside at the outside the ability to roll faster and farther when making a turn. The increase in speed of the outside wheel is balanced or offset by a decrease in the speed of the inside wheel. This results in an effective, relatively smooth, and safe turn. In layperson's terms, the outer wheel involved in turn makes more rotations than the inner wheel because it has further to travel. The differential compensates for this disparity automatically.
